Simplifying Your Root Canal Therapy

Comfortable Double Bay Endodontics

Root Canal Therapy Double BayOver the years, root canals have had a bad reputation for being what some describe as a lengthy and painful procedure. Fortunately, times have changed, but the rumours haven’t.

Today’s root canal treatments are as comfortable as having any other type of restorative procedure. With effective medication to numb the tooth and advanced imaging for diagnostics, getting a root canal is an easy decision to reduce your risk of painful toothaches or losing your tooth altogether.

Our root canals are a great solution for relieving tooth pain, not adding to it.

When Is a Root Canal Necessary?

When a tooth is abscessed, or the nerve is traumatised from an injury, the tissues inside of it begin to die, as does the tooth overall. By removing the dying nerve and sealing the hollow chamber left behind, the tooth structure itself can remain intact for much longer.

You may need to have a root canal if you’ve experienced

  • Large cavities or fractures
  • An injury to the mouth, even if years prior
  • Visible dental abscessing

Electing to treat your tooth endodontically can prevent an unnecessary tooth removal (and consequently, the costs of replacing your tooth after the extraction).

If severe infection is present, we may need to prescribe an antibiotic leading up to your appointment, so that initial swelling and bacterial levels can be lowered. Swelling is known to interfere with local anaesthetic, so the medication will help if taken as directed. However, an antibiotic will not clear up an abscessed tooth to the point where a root canal isn’t needed; infections often seep back in through the opening in the tooth’s structure.

Sedation Options Available

We want every patient to feel relaxed but especially those with dental phobia or who may need a more complex procedure. If you’ve never had a root canal and feel anxious about the process, our licensed sedation dentist can help to ease your mind.
