Double Bay TMJ Disorder Treatment

Non-surgical Pain Relief

TMJ Disorder Treatment Double BayThe temporomandibular joint (TMJ) can sometimes develop a painful condition that leads to chronic jaw pain and symptoms of

  • Headaches or migraines
  • Popping and clicking while opening or closing the mouth
  • Irregular tooth wear
  • Muscle fatigue through the neck, shoulders and back

This condition is known as “TMD” (temporomandibular joint disorder) and can affect everything from your meals to being able to function at work during the day.

Do I Have TMJ Disorder/TMD?

To determine if you have TMD, our family dentist will thoroughly evaluate your TMJ, the way your teeth bite together and likely take an X-ray to assess the internal anatomy surrounding your jaw joints.

TMD pain can originate from things like overuse, irregular biting patterns, traumatic injuries, stressful lifestyles (resulting in clenching and grinding) or bone disorders.

Treatments for TMD

If you have TMJ pain, we can help. In most cases, non-surgical therapies are the most effective and successful in the long term. In doing so, joint strain is reduced and thereby so is muscle fatigue and tooth wear.

Here are some of the more common treatments for TMD:

  • Bite splints that are worn at night or during the day prevent the jaw muscles from fully engaging in a clenched position that strains the joint. The jaw “learns” how to relax and become disengaged.
  • Massage and physical therapy ease tension and muscle pain, reducing the number of pain medications needed.
  • Injectables such as those used for cosmetic purposes can act as natural muscle relaxers to provide relief for several weeks or months.
  • Orthodontic therapy creates a more harmonious biting relationship between the upper and lower teeth, allowing the TMJ to function more efficiently.
  • Dietary changes such as avoiding hard, crunchy or chewy foods or at least limiting how often you eat them can provide much-needed relief.
